Amythyst Kiah continues to show off the range of her abilities and influences with a solo acoustic cover of Joy Division’s post-punk classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” which was released on Friday. It’s the Tennessee artist’s latest release since releasing a Moby remix of his hit “Black Myself” in 2021.
The jumpy, danceable beat of Joy Division’s original recording can’t be found here – instead, Kiah recreates the classic bass guitar melody as part of its acoustic guitar backing. As a singer, Kiah is poles apart from Ian Curtis’ somber tone, girding every line with conviction and adding some of her own embellishments to deepen the anguished sense of loss.
“’Love will tear us apart’ really resonated with me; [Ian Curtis] was dealing with a failed relationship and mental health issues, and he sadly committed suicide at the age of 23 to escape his pain,” Kiah said. rolling stone. “I know only too well what it is to lose a loved one in similar circumstances. As he rests in peace, this beautiful song lives on. Tragedy and beauty are two sides of the same coin, and this song is an example of that.
Kiah released her debut album through Rounder Records Suspicious + Strange in 2021 and it landed on rolling stonefrom the Top Country and American Albums list. In early February, she is scheduled to perform at Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend in Riviera Maya, Mexico, alongside Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls and Yola.
