EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Craig DeLeon’s score for The Last Days of Ptolemy Grayslated for digital release via Lakeshore Records on March 11, as the Apple TV+ series debuts worldwide with its first two episodes.
In the six-episode limited series based on the novel of the same name by Walter Mosley, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Dominique Fishback and Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, Jackson plays Ptolemy Grey, a sick man forgotten by his family, friends and even by itself. Suddenly left without his trusted caretaker and on the verge of sinking even deeper into solitary dementia, Ptolemy is left in the care of teenage orphan Robyn (Fishback). When they discover a treatment that can restore Ptolemy’s dementia-altered memories, it begins a journey to shocking truths about the past, present, and future.
“When I was asked to score The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray, the producers allowed me to do what I absolutely love about film music in the first place: create a world in which a story is told and emotions are felt,” DeLeon said. “For me, it’s about building a world of sound. An effective score is like the campfire in the woods where a storyteller tells you a story. They might say it on the phone or write it down, but it sounds different with the smell of firewood and pine and the night sky and flickering flames. The score is this campfire.
