Gaetz, who is the subject of a federal investigation for alleged obstruction of a child sex trafficking case in which he is involved, addressed a crowd of Spears supporters and called the continued guardianship “a black eye on the American legal system ”.
“Britney has been abused by the media. She was abused by a con artist father, and she was abused by the US justice system, ”Gaetz told crowds outside. And so we must come together to create a federal cause of action, a federal change in law that will free Britney and the millions of Americans who are affected by a corrupt guardian system that allows people to take advantage of the weak. “
“… There were crooks in this process who tried to act like they were speaking for Britney, that they knew what she wanted,” he said. “Well now the whole world knows what Britney Spears wants, and this is the freedom and the liberty that should be given to every American.”
Earlier this month, Gaetz and several other Republican lawmakers sent an invitation to Spears asking him to testify before Congress about the trusteeship.

“This case should open our eyes to the broader abuses that are occurring in this system for the millions of Americans affected,” he said.
The agenda for the hearing before Judge Brenda Penny included the singer’s personal choice for an attorney, a request from her personal curator for added security, and some estate accounting issues.
In a major victory for the singer, the judge on Wednesday approved the singer’s request to hire her own lawyer in her attempt to end the guardianship.
Until now, Spears has been represented by statutory counsel.
