Off the Record: beloved actress and acclaimed pianist Alicia Witt talks songwriting, new album and more

“I started taking piano lessons the same year I made my first movie, I was 7,” Alicia Witt told American Songwriter in the last episode of Off The Record. “It was one of those instant things where I felt like I had been playing the piano all my life. Unlike the stories some of my friends tell where they came to practice and work and they were eager to get it over with, I was the opposite – I wanted to spend all my time at the piano.

These days, you’ll probably recognize Witt in one of his many acting gigs – his aforementioned first film was that of David Lynch. Dune and, since then, she is in Twin peaks, Orange is the new black, Two weeks notice, 88 minutes (alongside Al Pacino), I don’t care a lot and more. But through it all, she had the support and comfort of one of her dearest friends: the piano.

But Witt is more than just a performer, she is also a composer. Almost as soon as she started to feel comfortable with the keys under her fingers, she started using them to express herself. “Now I can’t imagine my life without writing songs and sharing them with other people,” she said.

On September 24, Witt unveiled The conduit, his fifth studio album. Dressed in intimate and heartfelt tunes written (and produced) by Witt herself, the ingenuity of harmony and the wit of lyrical flow demonstrate her talent for song.

Sometimes like soul, other times like Americana, musical theater, folk or classical vocal music, the gist is this: the record is an exhibition of a timeless American sound. Coupled with Witt’s storytelling songs – which often make you feel like you’re sitting in his head, looking at the world through his eyes – this is a truly transporting record, lifting you out of this world and taking you into a wonderful place. walk. For her part, Witt is thrilled that people can finally take this trip with her.

“I can’t wait for these songs to be where people can absorb them and apply them to their own soundtracks,” Witt said. “Now they’re going to take on a whole new life and finally come out of my secret head, where I’ve been hearing them for so long now. It’s time to take them out and start working on the next one.
