The anniversary of the death of playwright SM Solaiman today

Today is the 21st anniversary of the death of Ekushey Padak-winning playwright, director, actor, music composer, singer and organizer SM Solaiman.

The Theater Art Unit theater troupe will celebrate the anniversary of his death with a program on October 7.

“We honor SM Solaiman every year by hosting a show in September. However, a number of our members are currently overseas. We will be holding a program on October 7 to commemorate his life and work,” Md Kamruzzaman, the troupe’s coordinator, told New Age.

“The program will take place at the Experimental Theater Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The event will feature a discussion and will feature a panel discussion and a theatrical performance,” he added.

SM Solaiman, born on September 29, 1953, introduced music as an important component of the country’s theatrical practice and founded theater groups, namely Theater Art Unit, Padatik and Dhaka Padatik. He has also written, translated and adapted 29 plays, including Court Martial, Amina Sundori, Khyapa Paglar Pya(n)chal, Ingit, Sunai Koinyar Pala and others.

Also, he served as Secretary General of Bangladesh Group Theater Federation twice.

SM Solaiman died on September 22, 2001. He was posthumously awarded Ekushey Padak in 2014.
